New Center Aims At Better Understanding Of Workplace Injury, Illness
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health monitors workplace injuries and workers’ compensation data around the country. Recently the federal agency announced that it has established a Center for Workers’ Compensation Studies to improve information gathering about workplace injury and illness.
This surveillance and research is very important to develop strategies to reduce the risk of on-the-job injuries and illnesses.
The goals of the Center for Workers’ Compensation Studies include identifying trends in injuries and illnesses around the country and understanding their economic impact. The center also aims to identify ways to prevent injuries and illnesses and develop best practices for safety management.
The researchers plan to analyze workers’ compensation data involving construction, manufacturing, mining, warehousing, transportation, wholesale and retail, healthcare and social assistance and other sectors that traditionally report very high rates of injuries and illnesses.
The center will encourage collaboration among scientists, insurers and other private and public sector organizations, the agency said.
